"Greens in Regulation"

Handicap strokes are awarded to allow the player an extra shot, or shots, between tee and green - we are all supposed to take a maximum of two putts per green.

Hitting the green in regulation occurs when the ball finishes on the green after our having played two (or less) shots than the par for the hole. e.g., on a par four you are allowed two shots to "hit the green in regulation" and two more for putting.

"Greens in Net Regulation"

Net regulation means regulation, as calculated above, to which is added any handicap shot(s) you have on that hole.

Hence an 18 handicap player would be allowed two shots to reach the green on a par 3, three shots on a par 4 and four shots on a par 5.

By using the net regulation stat we get a more realistic view of how well we are playing from tee to green at our current level of expertise.
